So when I was a kid a family member went through some intensive mental health treatment. One day coping skills weren't working and the family was facing homelessness. In an effort to retain custody the family member beat me until I was covered in welts and bruises. A few days later I was at an abuse shelter. Said family member did regain custody. Never happened again but to this day can't be sure what really caused the level of escalation.
